Most Reverend Oliver Aba, the Prelate of the Methodist Church in Nigeria, stated that gay marriage is an abomination to God and humanity, and a European effort to disrupt global norms. He emphasized that gay marriage is foreign to African culture and will be opposed by the church. He made these remarks during an interview after the Africa Methodist Council Heads of Conference Summit and Women’s Movement Leadership Summit in Lagos on Saturday.
The lecture, titled “Leadership in a Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous World,” was presented by Bishop Ivan Abrahams, General Secretary of the World Methodist Council. In an interview with Sunday PUNCH, he explained that the conference aimed to address not just the political issues facing Africa but also the social aspects of life.
He said: “Look at the issue of gay marriage. Gay marriage is an abomination. God did not make the world like that. He did not make Africans like that. It (gay marriage) is not African. (For one to say) That a man must sleep with another man, or a woman sleep with a woman; or for a man to take another man as a wife or vice versa is an abomination.
“It’s like the European world wants to turn the world upside down”.
He further said for procreation to take place, a man and a woman has to be involved, as it is the “natural order of things”.
