Mexican wrestling legend Miguel Ángel López Díaz, better known as Rey Misterio Sr., died Friday, December 20, 2024. He was 66 years old.
This tragic news was made public through a statement from his son El Hijo de Rey Mysterio, as emotional words on Instagram sounded the passing away of a hero: “You did more than set the example of how to love, maintain a strong marriage and father four boys until your death with flying colours. You are with God now.Will always be loved, RIP Pops”.
The cause of López Díaz’s death was not immediately released.
A lucha libre pioneer, Rey Misterio Sr. was an important part of shaping lucha libre into what it is today. He inspired numerous wrestlers, including his nephew, WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio. In addition to his work in the ring, he was a very important part of professional wrestling.
He will be greatly missed by fans all over the world.
