President Donald Trump has directed federal agencies to execute the most aggressive immigration enforcement operation in U.S. history, specifically targeting sanctuary cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York.

In a Truth Social post, Trump mobilized the full resources of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), declaring his administration would remove “those undermining domestic tranquility” while promising unprecedented detention capacity expansion.

Military Deployment Sets Off Legal Battles

The increase in surge coincides with an ongoing controversy over Trump’s use of National Guard troops to quell protests against immigration raids. Since June 6, demonstrations have erupted in 27 major cities following high-profile ICE operations, including fatal clashes at a “No Kings” rally in Salt Lake City. Legal experts warn the mass deportation order may violate constitutional protections, with ACLU attorneys preparing emergency injunctions.

Trump’s directive heightens the conflict between federal authorities and local governments protecting undocumented migrants. The administration has ordered ICE to prioritize raids in jurisdictions limiting cooperation with immigration enforcement, despite objections from mayors who cite public safety concerns.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has however, vowed to maintain sanctuary policies, calling the raids “political theater that terrorizes families.”
