NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte revealed on Saturday that he advised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to rebuild his relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump following their tense White House meeting for strong security guarantees while Trump expressed a willingness to engage diplomatically with Russian President Vladimir Putin, leading to the face off.
Rutte described the meeting as “unfortunate,” acknowledging that it had driven a wedge between Kyiv and its most crucial military ally, the United States. Speaking to the BBC, Rutte recounted his call with Zelenskiy, emphasizing the need for the Ukrainian leader to find common ground with Trump.
Acknowledging Trump’s Role in Ukraine’s Defense
Rutte reminded Zelenskiy of Trump’s past support for Ukraine, particularly his decision in 2019 to provide Javelin anti-tank missiles. These weapons, he argued, played a crucial role in Ukraine’s defense efforts when Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022.
“Without the Javelins in 2022, when the full-scale attack started, Ukraine would have been nowhere,” Rutte stated. He urged Zelenskiy to recognize Trump’s contributions, as well as America’s ongoing military aid, and to avoid further deterioration in relations with the U.S. administration.
Dodging the Tough Questions
When pressed on the heated exchange between Trump and Zelenskiy, Rutte remained diplomatic, declining to comment on whether Trump was justified in accusing Zelenskiy of risking World War Three. He also sidestepped questions about Trump’s stark ultimatum, either negotiate a deal or risk losing U.S. support.
Instead, Rutte reinforced NATO’s commitment to Ukraine and stressed the importance of unity among allies. “I am absolutely convinced that the U.S. wants to bring Ukraine to a durable peace… And obviously, what they need to get there is to make sure that we all work together on this,” he said.
Can NATO Fill the Gap?
With growing uncertainty over continued U.S. military support, Rutte was asked whether NATO allies could compensate for a potential American withdrawal. He dismissed the question, insisting that solidarity among Ukraine, the U.S., and Europe remains paramount.
“Let’s move beyond this question. It is crucial that we stay all in this together,” he said, framing Trump’s stance as part of a broader collective effort to secure peace.
The Road Ahead for Zelenskiy and Trump
The White House confrontation marks a critical moment in U.S.-Ukraine relations. As Ukraine continues to rely on Western military aid, Zelenskiy faces the challenge of navigating an unpredictable political landscape, particularly if Trump’s administration takes a more transactional approach to the war.
Rutte’s advice to President Zelenskiy accentuates the crucial role The U.S plays in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, it also highlights the importance of diplomacy in major international conflicts. However, it remains unclear whether Zelenskiy can or will heed the call to rebuild ties with Trump.
With the war still raging and U.S. policy in flux, Ukraine’s future depends not only on battlefield resilience but also on strategic diplomacy at the highest levels.
