In yet another tragic display of Nigeria’s crumbling infrastructure, emergency workers and volunteers are in a desperate race to rescue trapped individuals following the collapse of a school building in Plateau State. This incident, which highlights the dire need for quality construction, saw the structure of Saints Academy in Busa Buji, Jos North Local Government Area, give way on Friday morning, burying students and teachers beneath the rubble.
The collapse, which has resulted in at least 12 confirmed deaths and numerous injuries, has turned what should be a safe learning environment into a scene of chaos and despair. Eyewitnesses report that over 70 pupils were trapped, underscoring the gravity of this preventable disaster.
First responders, including officials from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Nigeria Police Force, are currently on-site conducting rescue operations. This catastrophe serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for robust and reliable infrastructure, as the nation can no longer afford to put its future—its children—at risk due to the negligence and substandard work of so-called professionals.
It’s high time we address the systemic issues plaguing our engineering sector. Our engineers, seemingly driven to desperation by economic pressures, are producing shoddy work that endangers lives. The call for real, sustainable infrastructure over the current ‘epileptic structures’ we endure is more pressing than ever.
