The Nigerian government has obtained a $200 million loan facility from Afreximbank aimed at developing the country’s creative industries. Hannatu Musawa, who is the Minister of Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy, revealed that the loan is part of the ministry’s ‘Destination 2030’ project.
The ultimate objective of this funding is to extend and improve Nigeria’s culture and business around the world. According to the ministry, it is noted that presently, there has been a 36% increase in the cultural impact of Nigeria in the year 2024.
President of the bank, Benedict Oramah, believes the loan will strengthen Nigeria’s creative sector. Minister Musawa anticipated that the loan would create two million jobs and add $100 billion to the GDP of Nigeria.
However, concern is raised as the country is battling with a huge debt burden; the debt burden as at March 2024 was estimated at 121.67 trillion Naira, according to the Debt Management Office. This new loan comes after a recent ₦2.6 trillion loan from the World Bank.
The initiatives of the ministry seek to enhance economic development, but past projects funded by loans have had trouble meeting their goals.
