In a recurring and concerning trend, renowned Nollywood actors facing the challenges of aging and illness often resort to appealing for public assistance. The glaring question is why the Nollywood association does not provide an insurance plan for its stars.
The latest example is the beloved comic actor of Nollywood, John Okafor, popularly known as Mr. Ibu. Presently, Mr. Ibu finds himself battling illness within the confines of an undisclosed private hospital in Lagos.
In a widely circulated video posted on his verified Instagram account, Mr. Ibu earnestly reached out to his fans for help and prayers. He revealed that he has been hospitalized for several weeks, and a grim ultimatum hangs over him. His medical team has conveyed that amputation may be the only recourse if their next course of action fails.
“I have been bedridden for several weeks. All I ask for is your prayers and support. I am currently lying in this hospital, and the hospital’s medical director suggested that if their new approach doesn’t work, they may have to amputate my leg. Just think about it, if they amputate my leg, what will become of me? Please, pray for me. Seek God’s intervention. I don’t want to lose my leg. Thank you very much, and God bless,” implored the actor.
In the same video, his daughter, Jasmine Okafor, appealed to both individuals and organizations to facilitate Mr. Ibu’s medical treatment abroad, as he hasn’t shown any significant improvement even while being treated in what she described as “one of the best private facilities in Lagos.”
She stated, “As a family, we are making this earnest plea for people to come to Daddy’s aid. For the past two weeks, his condition has been steadily deteriorating, so we admitted him to the hospital. I have been trying to cover the medical bills, thinking I could handle it alone. We’ve done everything humanly possible. We believed that, as a family, we could handle it ourselves and ensure his recovery, but sadly, he hasn’t shown any improvement.”
Mr. Ibu’s wife, who also featured in the video, lamented her husband’s condition and joined the chorus of voices seeking assistance to rescue him from this dire situation.
Mr. Ibu, a prominent figure in the Nollywood industry, recently celebrated his 62nd birthday from his hospital bed. He boasts an extensive filmography of over 200 Nollywood movies, including popular works like “Mr. Ibu” (2004) and “Mr. Ibu and His Son.”
This situation has prompted questions about the absence of support systems, like an association within Nollywood, which is not uncommon in major industries like Hollywood. Now, the industry and fans await to see if other Nollywood stars will come to Mr. Ibu’s aid, as he has brought laughter and joy to countless viewers over the years, and they hope not to see his smile extinguished by sickness.
