Liberia’s presidential election is still on track for a run-off on Wednesday, October 18 after an almost complete provisional results revealed that President George Weah and opposition leader Joseph Boakai had been neck-and-neck, and beneath the threshold needed to prevent a second round.
Following the results of the October 10 general elections, Weah is currently leading on the tiny margin of 43.84%, while Boakai got 43.44% of votes, according to the calculated results from 99.93% of polling places, according to a report by the West African nation’s election commission.
Note that to prevent a run-off, the winner had to secure over 50% of the total votes cast.
The election commission had on Tuesday, October 17 said that the ballots would be re-cast in two polling places in northern Nimba County on Friday, October 20 due to inconsistencies.
