Norway has announced that it will recognise an independent Palestinian state in the confidence that this will help to broker peace with Israel. This development was revealed by the Prime Minister, Jonas Gahr Stoere, on Wednesday.

The other countries also recognising a Palestinian state were Ireland snd Spain.
Additionally, European Union members Slovenia and Malta had in recent weeks declared that they plan to make the recognition, contending that a two-state solution is essential for lasting peace in the region.

Before Norway’s announcement, about 143 out of 193 member-states of the United Nations have shown recognition towards a Palestinian state.

Certain countries like Sweden, had long since recognised a Palestinian state, about a decade ago, while France has said that it is not planning to do so unless it would be an effective tool to make progress towards peace.

This moves is coming as Israeli forces are spearheading assaults on the northern and southern edges of the Gaza Strip leading to a new exodus of hundreds of thousands of people, and sharply restricted the flow of aid, increasing the risk of famine.

Norway is a close ally of the U.S., and the Nordic country has been looking to help mediate for peace between Israel and the Palestinians on several occasions in recent years.

Why It Matters

Norway’s decision to recognize a Palestinian state, along with Ireland and Spain, is a notable step towards brokering peace between Israel and Palestine.

This move adds to the growing global support for a two-state solution, with 143 UN member-states already recognizing Palestinian statehood. The announcement is coming as the violence in Gaza is intensifying, highlighting the need for peace efforts. Despite its close ties with the U.S., Norway has shown its commitment to mediating peace and addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Bottom Line

Norway’s recognition of a Palestinian state, alongside Ireland and Spain, spotlights a global push for a two-state solution amidst the escalating violence in Gaza and highlights Norway’s commitment to peace despite having close ties with the U.S.
