There was bedlam on Thursday, June 29 in Ado Ekiti, the capital state of Ekiti State when commercial motorcyclists aka okada riders, launched a protest against the leaders of their association.
The disgruntled riders who barricaded a few streets and notable junctions in the town had demanded for the removal of the present union’s executives, on account of alleged corruption, abuse of power, high-handedness, attacks on colleagues and fund embezzlement.
The commercial bike riders had urged Governor Biodun Oyebanji to retire the executives and take over the task of running the sector.
The Okada riders had also revealed a recent provocation meted out to them by the union leaders whereby a fellow commercial motorcyclist, who was conveying a passenger to their destination was pushed while in motion. The bike man and his passengers had sustained serious injuries.
However, at the time of writing this report, the protesting Okada riders had been dispersed by a team of armed police officials.
The leaders of the association had meanwhile, declined entreaties to comment.
While the story is still developing, we hop the Ekiti State government looks into this situation and allow the law to run its course before further escalation.
Harassment and abuse of power should never be taken lightly irrespective of the status of the person.
