South African ex-Paralympic star, Oscar Pistorius, has been released on parole and is presently at home, according to South Africa’s correctional services department on Friday.
Recall that Pistorius was convicted of murdering his 29-year-old girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp – a model and bright law graduate – by shooting her with a gun, through the door of a bathroom in his Pretoria home in 2013.
However today, Friday, January 5, he was released from prison nearly 11 years after the murder.
This is coming after he was granted parole on November 24, 2023 and it will take effect on January 5.
Pistorius will remain under close watch and will be subject to parole conditions until his sentence terminate in December 2029.
Pistorius is not allowed to consume alcohol and other barred substances and will be prohibited from conducting media interviews, the Department of Correctional Services added.
The ex-Paralympic star was originally imprisoned for five years in 2014 for liable homicide. That sentence was adjusted to six years after the Supreme Court of Appeal in late 2015 found him guilty of the more serious charge of murder, eventually increasing it to 13 years after prosecutors argued that the punishment was too clement.
