The Rivers State Police Command reported a successful operation in which a notorious cultist known as Azunda Elechi was killed during a shootout with police officers. Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the command, issued a statement on Thursday in Port Harcourt, revealing the details of the incident. Elechi, a member of the Dey-Gbam cult group, was identified as one of the individuals involved in an attack on Mgbola Village in Ndele Emohua Local Government Area, which resulted in the death of four people.
According to Iringe-Koko, on May 31, 2023, the Dey-Gbam Cult Group launched another assault on the community. During a fierce exchange of gunfire between the cultists and the police/local vigilantes, Azunda Elechi sustained fatal injuries.
As a result of the operation, the police recovered one pump-action shotgun, two live cartridges, and three empty cartridge shells.
Commissioner of Police, CP Nwonyi Polycard, has urged parents and guardians to closely monitor their children and wards to prevent them from succumbing to societal pressures leading them towards criminal activities.
He also urged the public to abide by the law and promptly report any suspicious activities within their neighborhoods to the police using the appropriate channels.
