Two-year-old Ivan Omhonrina lost his life to a stray bullet during an operation conducted by officers of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in the Okpanam area of Delta State. The incident occurred on July 13. President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow and concern following this tragic incident
In a statement released by his media aide, Dele Alake, today, President Tinubu has directed the NDLEA management to launch a swift and thorough investigation into the matter. The President called for those responsible for this tragic loss of life to be held accountable and emphasized the need for heightened professionalism and caution among security agents during their operations to prevent further harm to innocent citizens.
“I mourn the death of little Ivan Omhonrina and sympathize with his parents for the painful experience of losing an innocent child in a most tragic manner,” President Tinubu stated. “We must ensure that this incident doesn’t end in vain, and that the untimely demise of Ivan becomes a catalyst for positive change to prevent such tragedies from recurring in the future. Let us work diligently to bring those responsible for this agony to justice.”
The NDLEA operation aimed to apprehend criminals and suspected drug peddlers in the Okpanam area, particularly focusing on a notorious drug joint. However, the operation took a tragic turn, leaving young Ivan fatally wounded as he enjoyed a meal of corn and pear with his family. Witnesses recounted that a stray bullet pierced the roof of Ivan’s mother’s cake shop, shattering glass and causing further injuries to Ivan’s sibling, Eronmonsele, in the eye.
As the news of this incident spreads, it has sparked outrage across Nigeria, with many questioning the use of lethal force in an industrial area with civilians nearby. This incident has drawn attention to concerns about the professionalism of security agencies, particularly regarding the use of firearms.
Many have called for extensive reforms and improved training within security agencies to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The incident has highlighted the need for better measures to ensure public safety while carrying out law enforcement operations.
As the nation mourns the loss of young Ivan Omhonrina, citizens are voicing their hope for a safer and more accountable approach to security and the use of firearms, striving for a Nigeria where both criminals and security forces respect the sanctity of innocent lives.
