On Sunday, a helicopter in the convoy of Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi was involved in an accident, according to state media. It remains unclear whether President Raisi was on board the helicopter at the time.
State television reported, “Some unconfirmed reports suggest that the helicopter carrying President Raisi has had an accident in East Azerbaijan province.” The report added that rescue efforts were ongoing.
Rescue teams are facing significant challenges due to harsh weather conditions and heavy fog, which are making it difficult to reach the accident site, according to an on-screen news alert from state TV.
There are also local media reports indicating that Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and other local officials were traveling in the same helicopter as Raisi.
President Raisi was in East Azerbaijan province on Sunday to inaugurate a dam project alongside Azeri President Ilham Aliev, near the border between Iran and Azerbaijan.
Ebrahim Raisi, 63, has been serving as the president of Iran since June 2021.
