British actor and comedian Russell Brand appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday to face serious sexual offense charges involving four women between 1999 and 2005.
The 49-year-old, once a household name in UK entertainment and ex-husband of pop star Katy Perry, was charged with rape, oral rape, indecent assault, and two counts of sexual assault.
Prosecutor Suki Dhadda outlined allegations spanning locations including a Labour Party conference, a London bar, an office building, and during Brand’s tenure working on ‘Big Brother.’
Wearing sunglasses and a dark shirt, Brand remained silent in court except to confirm his name and address. Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring granted conditional bail ahead of the next hearing at London’s Old Bailey on May 30.
Two accusers were reportedly TV company employees, while another worked at a radio station. The charges follow a 2023 investigation by The Sunday Times and Channel 4’s “Dispatches,” which first brought the allegations to light.
From BBC Star to Internet Commentator – Brand’s Controversial Career
Once a flamboyant fixture on British screens, Brand starred in films like ‘Get Him to the Greek’ and hosted BBC programs before marrying Perry in 2010. Their divorce after 14 months marked a turning point in his career.
By the early 2020s, he had pivoted to online commentary, espousing views on U.S. politics and free speech. Last year, Brand announced his conversion to Christianity while continuing to deny all allegations.
Brand’s Past Admission of “Sex Addiction” Resurfaces
In a preemptive video statement last month, Brand acknowledged past reckless behavior during his “younger days” but vehemently denied criminal conduct: “I was a fool, but what I never was, was a rapist.”
The Metropolitan Police launched their investigation weeks after the 2023 media reports, culminating in Friday’s formal charges. As Brand left court without comment, the case adds to ongoing debates about accountability in the entertainment industry.
