The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has just filed a lawsuit against President Muhammadu Buhari over his unlawful mandate of banning the use of old N500 and N1,000 banknotes, contrary to the interim injunction the Supreme Court had granted.
Joining in the suit as defendants were the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, and the CBN.
This is coming after Buhari in a national broadcast on Thursday, February 16 directed the CBN to recirculate only old N200 banknotes, effectively banning the use of old N500 and N1,000 notes in the country.
SERAP in the suit had therefore asked the court for “a declaration that Buhari’s recent order of banning the use of old N500 and N1,000 naira notes was a fundamental breach of section 287(1) of the Nigerian Constitution 1999 (as amended).
The suit had also sought the order of interim injunction restraining Buhari, the CBN, and Malami, their agents or supporters, from further enforcing the presidential mandate banning the old N500 and N1,000 banknotes, until the hearing and determination of the motion on notice filed in its suit.
