Chinese fast fashion app Shein has made a comeback in India five years after its ban by Delhi, thanks to a strategic partnership with Indian retail giant Reliance Retail. This re-entry marks a significant development in India’s e-commerce landscape and raises questions about the future of online retail in the country.
Reliance Retail has entered a long-term licensing agreement with Shein’s parent company, granting them the right to sell Shein products manufactured and sourced in India on the platform. This collaboration signifies a shift in Shein’s business model and a commitment to local production.
Data Security and Indian Regulations: Strict Terms for Shein’s Return
Shein’s re-entry into the Indian market is subject to strict regulations, including the requirement to store all data within India. This measure, confirmed by Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, addresses foreign data security concerns that led to the initial ban.
The 2020 India App Bans: Data Security Concerns and Border Tensions
In 2020, India banned Shein and dozens of other Chinese apps, including TikTok, citing data security concerns. This decision had come after increased tensions between the two countries after clashes in a disputed Himalayan border region.
Shein’s India App Relaunch
Shein’s app relaunched in India on Friday and has already garnered over 10,000 downloads. While currently available only in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, the company has made plans to expand its services across India soon, according to a notification on the app.
Over the past decade, Shein has transformed from a relatively unknown brand to a global fast fashion powerhouse. Currently hipping to 150 countries, Shein’s success is attributed to its trendy designs and affordable prices.
Minister Goyal clarified that the ban targeted the app, not the sale of Shein-branded products. The agreement with Reliance Retail grants the Indian company full control over operations and data, ensuring that Shein acts as a technological partner without access rights to Indian user data.
India’s Other Banned Apps: TikTok, PUBG, and BGMI’s Rebranding
Along with Shein, other prominent apps like TikTok and PUBG were also banned. PUBG however, later re-entered the Indian market in a rebranded form as Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), under the ownership of Krafton India.
