Nigerian singer and songwriter Simi has opened up about her emotional resilience, revealing that she has never truly experienced heartbreak. According to the award-winning artist, her instinct to protect her mental health has always guided her to walk away from situations that feel emotionally unsafe.
In a heartfelt chat with media personality VJ Adams, Simi shared that while she has dealt with emotional pain, she doesn’t recall ever having her heart broken.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been heartbroken, but I’ve been hurt before. I don’t have any memory of being heartbroken, but I’ve probably broken someone’s heart though,” she said.
Simi explained that her approach to relationships—whether romantic or platonic—is grounded in her commitment to emotional well-being. She said she doesn’t stay in situations that feel wrong just to avoid hurting others or being pitied.
“I’m the type of person who used to say that I never wanted someone to date me so that I don’t feel bad or because they pity me. Let me feel bad, then I’d get over it,” she noted. “It’s the same way I used to operate; if I felt like something wasn’t working, I’d walk away from it.”
Her stance on self-protection also applies to friendships. Simi emphasized that she distances herself from people or environments that make her feel emotionally vulnerable.
“This isn’t even only for relationships. If I have friends that make me feel unsafe, I’m ready to cut it off because I have anxiety,” she added.
While acknowledging that emotional pain is sometimes unavoidable, especially when one cares deeply, she believes setting boundaries has helped her avoid deep heartbreak.
“This is why I say I don’t remember ever being heartbroken before but I’ve been hurt. When you love people there’s always the capacity for them to hurt you,” she concluded.
