According to accounts in the media, Aaron Carter, who first gained notoriety as a child music star and toured with his brother’s successful band Backstreet Boys before pursuing careers in rap and film, was discovered dead at his house close to Los Angeles on Saturday.
On Saturday afternoon, a representative for the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department told Reuters that officers had discovered a deceased individual at Carter’s home and that homicide investigators were en route to the scene, but they were unable to provide any other information.
There were no reports that Carter’s death was thought to be the result of foul play.
According to TMZ and The Hollywood Reporter, Carter, 34, recorded his debut album in 1997 when he was just 9 years old and went on to become a child pop sensation who frequently appeared on Nickelodeon. Later in his musical career, he began rapping. He also performed in plays like “Seussical” on Broadway.
He battled addiction issues for years, occasionally disclosing them in public.
He pulled out a bag full of prescription medications during a 2019 appearance on the celebrity wellness TV program “The Doctors,” where he claimed to have taken them after being given a diagnosis of multiple personality disorder, schizophrenia, manic depression, and anxiety.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Carter visited drug rehab facilities several times, most notably earlier this year, in an effort to regain custody of his son, Prince.
