On Thursday, nine alleged robbers were murdered in a gunfight with police during a thwarted cash theft, according to South African officials.
According to police, the group was traced to an address in Sebokeng, a township south of Johannesburg, as the suspects were on their way to attack a vehicle carrying money in the morning.
Athlenda Mathe, a police spokeswoman said a shootout ensued and Eight suspects were pronounced dead at the spot, while the ninth died in hospital.
Three more were injured and were brought to a neighboring medical institution for treatment.
The organization was thought to be responsible for a string of cash heists on armored security trucks in Johannesburg’s Gauteng region and nearby locations.
Six guns, “ready to detonate” explosives, and four cars were recovered at the scene, according to Mathe.
In South Africa, robbers frequently target automobiles transporting cash.
Two onlookers were killed and one was injured earlier this week after being caught up in a heist in Benoni, east of Johannesburg, then indiscriminately shot at.
