Nigeria’s Super Falcons clinched a 1-0 victory over South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in the first leg of the Paris 2024 Olympic games final qualifiers. The match, held in Abuja on Friday, saw Rasheedat Ajibade convert a late first-half penalty, marking the Falcons’ first win against South Africa since their 2018 WAFCON final victory.

Ajibade’s decisive goal came in the 43rd minute following a foul on Chiwendu Ihezuo inside the box. The Falcons now look forward to at least a draw in the second leg in Pretoria on Tuesday, 9 April 2024. The team that triumphs over the two legs will secure one of the two coveted tickets to the Paris 2024 Olympic games.
The Super Falcons, who made their last Olympic appearance at Beijing 2008, aim to return to the global stage after missing out on the London 2012, Rio 2016, and Tokyo 2020 games. Their best Olympic outing was at Athens 2004 when they reached the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, the other qualifier is set between Morocco and Zambia.
