It’s that time of the year when we make our customary voyage home, to our villages (at least for some of us) after spending most of the year in various cities hustling hard and making money for our relatives back home (thanks a lot, capitalism!).
If you’re planning to make any travels during this Harmattan, you best be prepared. This season – as we’re all familiar by now– can pose a real challenge with its dry, dusty winds and unpredictable weather. But don’t worry, I’ve got you covered with the ultimate list of travel essentials to help you stay one step ahead in this weather.
The Essentials
Skincare
This includes:
– Heavy-Duty Moisturizer: Because your skin will need all the hydration it can get. It is advised you opt for a thick, nourishing moisturizer to keep that glow.
– Lip Balm: Thanks to the dry, windy air, you’re bound to have constant chapped lips if you don’t take care of it. This is the time where keeping a hydrating lip balm handy is always recommended.
– Sunscreen: Listen! Just because it’s dusty and hazy outside doesn’t mean the sun’s rays aren’t still harmful. This is not the time to take chances with your skin, slather on your SPF as you would for any other season.
– Hydrating Face Masks: Having a few sheet masks or hydrating face masks handy can help provide an extra boost of hydration for your skin after a long day out in the dry air.
Protective Gear
You’ll definitely be needing:
– Sunglasses: To protect your eyes from dust and UV rays. I learned this lesson the hard way on a short, interstate trip I undertook recently. Not only does sunglasses shield your eyes from dust, it’ll help you look cool while at it.
– Nose Masks/Scarves: Just the sensation of breathing in dust while walking is enough to make me purchase the pocket friendly nose mask talk more while travelling.
– Hats/Caps: Hats are good at keeping the sun’s harsh rays and often times dust off your face. Not to mention that they can double as a stylish accesory.
Stay Hydrated
– Water Bottles: Hydration is key, especially during this season. When you’re on the go, carry a reusable water bottle and keep sipping at intervals to keep dehydration at bay.
Alternatively, electrolyte solutions are helpful for keeping one’s hydration levels up with some electrolyte-packed drinks.
Health Essentials
You’ll be needing:
– Hand Sanitizer: To help keep your hands clean at all times.
– Moisturizing Eye Drops: For some of us, our allergies manifest during the harmattan in the form of dry eyes which are no fun. Avoid this uncomfortable feeling by keeping some eye drops on you at all times.
Tech and Gadgets
– Power Banks: This is to avoid the inconvenience of your phone dying on you. A power bank is a lifesaver, especially during emergencies.
– Portable Humidifier: A small, portable humidifier can help add moisture to the dry air in your hotel room or car to keep your skin and respiratory system hydrated.
Hair Care
– Leave-In Conditioner: The dry air can make your hair frizzy and dry, so extra moisture is key. A leave-in conditioner or hair oil can help with this by keeping your hair hydrated and manageable, especially for those with the 4C hair texture.
