Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has made history as the first female African artiste with a song surpassing 1 billion streams on Spotify.
She achieved this milestone as Wait For U, her collaboration with Future and Drake, recently crossed 1 billion streams on Spotify.
The 2022 track features a sample of Tems’ Higher from her debut EP, For Broken Ears (2020).
The song premiered at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, marking Tems as the first African artiste to debut at the top of the chart.
Wait For U received two nominations at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, for Best Rap Song and Best Melodic Rap Performance, ultimately winning the latter.
Chart Data announced this on the X platform on Sunday, stating, “Tems becomes the first female African artist to have a song earn 1 billion streams on Spotify (“WAIT FOR U”; @temsbaby).”
