There is palpable tension Kano State over the purported forceful return of deposed Emir Aminu Ado Bayero.
This is coupled with the fact that the Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf has called for his immediate arrest.
It was learnt that the governor, his Deputy, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam and other top government dignitaries have taken over the Emir’s Palace in an effort to bar the deposed Emir’s forceful return.
A statement by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, revealed that in the governor’s position as the State Chief Security Officer, he has called for the arrest of the deposed Emir for flouting the laws and his orders.
It has been alleged that two private jets were used to bring back the deposed Emir Aminu Ado Bayero back to Kano in an attempt to reinstall him, but the Governor and his cabinet members have already taken over the Emir’s Palace in anticipation of any unanticipated brouhaha.
What They’re Saying:
A video clip making rounds on social media, revealed Aminu Abdussalam, the State Deputy Governor talking furiously, saying, “we are ready for them hence they want to bring chaos to Kano by their illegal actions of returning the deposed Emir Aminu Ado Bayero”.
We are here, we are not going anywhere, because we understand that the NSA under the orders of Ganduje has brought back the deposed Emir with heavy security trying to bring him into the palace; we will not allow that to happen,” he alleged.
“The State Assembly deliberated for three days on the Emirate Council Law and Repealed it, and all the 40 members of the Legislative Chamber were there, so I don’t understand what the NSA and Ganduje want,” he further alleged.
Why it matters:
Emirs hold significant cultural and historical importance in Northern Nigeria. The attempt to reinstall a deposed Emir, and the government’s forceful response, touch deeply on issues of heritage, identity, and the role of traditional leadership in modern governance.
Additionally, the involvement of high-profile figures, including the governor and deputy governor, as well as allegations against former Governor Ganduje, could have far-reaching political consequences, influencing future elections and governance in Kano State.
Finally, the palpable tension and the potential for conflict pose a direct threat to the safety and security of Kano’s residents. If this matter is not handled diplomatically, it could escalate and lead to widespread chaos, disrupting daily life and causing harm to civilians.
