The 2023 fashion season has come and gone and while I’m greatly anticipating this year’s fashion looks, I can’t help but look back on the fashion trends that rocked 2023. We’ve all heard the term: “Fashion is cyclical” and while that might be true, there are unarguable certain trends that saw the light of say last year that we do not ever want to see this year, or ever again.
Decades from now, the new generation of fashion savvy men and women will look towards the year 2023 to provide inspiration for whatever outfits they are conjuring up or to bring back one or a few notable fits.
With the exception for a few items of clothing, the year 2023 belonged to accessories, particularly statement shoes, that prioritise comfort above anything else. It is important to highlight that the influence of celebrities on fashion trends doesn’t seem to be waning anytime soon.
Read on to find out the fashion ‘no-s’, the ‘maybe-s’ and the ‘yes-es’:
The Fashion ‘No-s’
The No Pants Fashion Trend:
Just in case you’re confused by its name, this style is basically wearing underwear as an outerwear, outdoors. This mostly trended on the streets of New York and had both the famous and non-famous individuals thinking up new ways to look chic and classy in their underwear. Some would wear tights below their underwear and strutting the street like normal.
Oversized Men Blazers:
One thing about this trend is that it looks good and stylish when supermodels wear them to strut the runway. When seen on the streets, in real life? Not so much. There is the problem of practicality to consider, especially seeing as its made for both men and women.
The Big Carton Boots Trend:
This fit was okay and seemed cool if you only want to take cute pictures for Instagram, otherwise, it needs to be trashed. The trend began with the launch of the ‘big red boot’ from MSCHF, a well-known US fashion label at the beginning of 2023. A few celebrities like Ayra Starr and Lil Nas X were seen sporting this look.
The Fashion ‘Maybe-s’
The Denim Maxi Skirt:
Some say this was an unnecessary fashion trend that should’ve have stayed in the past but I think this trend has potential. Although it is hard to style, bulky material and has an awkward length, it looks good on the daring few that have managed to pull it off on the streets of Tiktok and Instagram.
Sheer Dresses:
Several Hollywood celebrities embraced this trend last year at the red carpet. Emily Ratajowski and Ciara were some of the A-list stars I saw sporting this look. It is admittedly, a little too much to show your underwear brazenly, for the public to look at. However, concessions could be made for this look to be conservative without loosing its style.
The Denim on Denim Trend:
This trend became after Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake stepped out in the early 2000s with matching denim on denim ensemble. 2023 saw this trend make a re-appearance in the fashion scene. Several people have condemned this trend, saying that it has to go but I love the ‘coastal cowgirl’ look, to name a few.
The Fashion ‘Yes-es’
Messi’s Pink Miami Jersey:
The fashion scene had a surprising love affair with soccer outfits in 2023. Messi’s Pink Miami Jersey was the hot cake last year as it sold out very quickly after the announcement that he was to join the Inter Miami team, months after he made history by winning the World Cup for his team in 2022.
Cargo Pants:
Listen, say whatever you want about this fit, I love it, especially when it is paired when a cropped/tight-fitted top. Cargo pants are characterised by baggy legs, long hems and ample space. There’s actually nothing to hate about this outfit.
Crotchet:
I love how crotchet wears are now taken very seriously. A few wears were even spotted on the runway last year. I’m eager to see how this fit improves and innovates as it trends.
