Toronto’s mayor abruptly resigned after admitting to having a connection with a former employee.
Shortly after the Toronto Star reported that he had an affair with the 31-year-old lady, whom he did not identify, John Tory made his declaration.
He claimed that the relationship, which had begun during the Covid-19 outbreak, had “finished mutually this year by consent.”
The interaction was described by the 68-year-old as “a significant lapse of judgment.”
Mr. Tory issued a statement in which he expressed his sincere regret and his unreserved apology to the citizens of Toronto and to everyone else he had harmed.
To guarantee a smooth transition to a new administration, Mr. Tory promised to engage with city employees and deputy mayor Jennifer McKelvie.
After defeating Doug Ford and Olivia Chow in the election, he took office in December 2014.
In 2018, Mr. Tory won re-election, and four years later he secured a third term in power.
A by-election will be held at a later time to choose Mr. Tory’s elected replacement.
