The Oyo State Olugbon of Orile-Igbon, Oba Francis Alao, has remarked to the state House of Assembly to be careful as regards the proposed amendment of the Chiefs Law of the state.
The Chief’s Law amendment seeks to empower the state governor to appoint certain chiefs the traditional rulers to bead-wearing obas if the council of obas and chiefs failed to meet to consider their elevation.
But Oba Alao, who is additionally the Vice Chairman of the state Council of Obas and Chiefs, had cautioned the move via a memorandum he submitted during the public hearing by the state House of Assembly on the proposed amendment, lamenting that the proposal did not take the customs and traditions of the people into consideration and that it could easily cause unnecessary communal clashes and border disputes.
Meanwhile, the ruling houses in the state have strongly opposed the abrogation of the powers of the Council of Obas and Chiefs on all matters relating to chieftaincies in the state.
