The death toll from the 7.8 magnitude earthquake which occurred in the early hours of Monday, 6 February has surpassed 24,150 casualties across southern Turkey and northwest Syria.
However, two women have been rescued alive from a collapsed building after being trapped for 122 hours according to Turkish authorities on Saturday, 11 February.
One of the rescued women, Menekse Tabak, aged 70, sustained no serious injuries while the other woman, Mashallah Cicek, aged 55 had sustained injuries after being extricated from the debris of a collapsed building in Diyarbakir, southeast Turkey.
According to Turkey’s disaster management, the death toll in Turkey had risen to over 20,665 on Saturday, February 11. In Syria, however, over 3,500 individuals have perished and many more individuals remain under the rubble.
In Turkey, approximately 80,000 people are being treated in the hospital, while 1.05 million individuals, left homeless by the quakes, are huddled in temporary shelters, Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay reported.
