Uncertainty Grips Labour as Starmer Exit Reports Circulate

Reports suggest British Prime Minister Keir Starmer could step down on Monday and announce a timeline for his exit, a move that may pave the way for a swift leadership transition in government, according to The Observer. However, a government source said Starmer remains focused on carrying out his duties, and no official resignation has been announced.

On Saturday, The Observer reported that Starmer had reportedly concluded his position was no longer sustainable following consultations with senior cabinet ministers, political advisers, party donors and trade union leaders, as pressure mounted over his leadership and concerns grew about his support within the Labour Party.

The matter remains uncertain, as there has been no formal statement from either the prime minister or Downing Street confirming the reports.

The Observer reported that Starmer, who became prime minister in 2024, is expected to outline plans for an “orderly exit” from Downing Street, including a schedule for stepping aside. Senior Labour figures are reportedly anticipating an announcement as early as Monday, which could lead to either a leadership race or an interim arrangement depending on the structure of the transition.

The report indicates that over recent days, the prime minister has been assessing his position after holding discussions with key political and organisational stakeholders. Those exchanges are said to have heightened concerns about his capacity to retain authority within both the government and the Labour Party.

He is also understood to have spoken privately with his wife at Chequers, the prime minister’s official country residence, as he weighs his final decision.

The reported move follows rising concerns within Labour ranks, where some senior figures have reportedly begun to doubt Starmer’s ability to hold together the diverse bloc of support that secured the party’s return to power.

The situation has been building for several weeks. Last month, more than 80 Labour MPs are said to have called on Starmer to step down after disappointing local election results, where Labour lost over 1,100 council seats across England, while Reform UK gained more than 1,450.

Starmer was reportedly held responsible for the party’s decline in popularity amid ongoing economic challenges and a series of policy errors, including controversy over the appointment of a close associate of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein as the UK’s ambassador to the United States. Starmer has maintained that he never met Epstein and has not been accused of any wrongdoing, while Peter Mandelson was dismissed from his role in September.

Although The Observer does not point to a single defining cause, the fact that senior cabinet ministers, party advisers and trade union leaders were reportedly consulted suggests deeper, systemic concerns within the party. In UK politics, such levels of engagement are often viewed as a sign that discussions around a possible leadership transition are gaining serious momentum.

Should Starmer resign, focus would quickly shift to potential successors and the speed at which the Labour Party could organise a leadership contest or appoint an interim replacement.

One of the names already attracting interest is Andy Burnham, the 56-year-old Mayor of Greater Manchester, who has recently re-entered Parliament and is often mentioned as a possible contender for the leadership. His return has fuelled further talk of a potential leadership race, especially after his by-election win on Friday removed an important barrier to a possible bid for the top position.

“Everyone knows that politics isn’t working,” Burnham said during his victory speech. “Everyone can feel that the country isn’t where it should be. Tonight could, just could, be the turning point.”

On X, Starmer congratulated him, writing that voters “chose Labour’s campaign of hope and optimism over division and hate.”

However, the prime minister has maintained that he would resist any efforts to remove him from office.

“I will run, I will stand,” if there is a Labour leadership contest, Starmer said. “I’ve said repeatedly I’m not going to walk away from that.”
