A group of gunmen on Monday reportedly killed a policeman and stole his service rifle at Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area. They also attacked the state-owned Anambra Broadcasting Service, ABS, in a separate incident.
According to various sources, the gunmen made their base in an area close to Ogidi Town Hall where some policemen usually manned a checkpoint and opened fire when they caught sight of the approaching patrol team.
In the chaos resulting from the ambush, a policeman was killed and his service rifle stolen, a source explained.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO), Mr. Tochukwu Ikenga in a statement confirmed that there had indeed been a gun battle between policemen and some malcontents, which led to the death of one of the policemen.
