A group of gunmen on Monday reportedly killed a policeman and stole his service rifle at Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area. They also attacked the state-owned Anambra Broadcasting Service, ABS, in a separate incident.

According to various sources, the gunmen made their base in an area close to Ogidi Town Hall where some policemen usually manned a checkpoint and opened fire when they caught sight of the approaching patrol team.

In the chaos resulting from the ambush, a policeman was killed and his service rifle stolen, a source explained.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO), Mr. Tochukwu Ikenga in a statement confirmed that there had indeed been a gun battle between policemen and some malcontents, which led to the death of one of the policemen.

Ikenga added that operations were still ongoing at the scene and patrols in the area had been intensified.

Meanwhile, in a related incident, some gunmen also barged into the premises of the Anambra Broadcasting Service, Awada, and set a building along with some vehicles on the grounds ablaze. Luckily, no life was lost in the attacks but some workers at the scene, unfortunately, sustained some injuries.

As of the time of writing both cases are still being looked into by the police and an official conclusion is yet to be reached.
