Liverpool have announced that captain Virgil van Dijk has signed a new contract and will stay at Anfield until 2027 amid speculation about his future. The 33-year-old’s previous contract was set to run out this summer, but he has now signed for two more years.
Van Dijk joins Mohamed Salah, who also extended his contract recently, as Arne Slot shapes his squad around yet more key players retained.
“I’m really happy, really proud,” Van Dijk told the club’s official website. “It was always Liverpool. It was still clear in my head. I’m one of Liverpool. “There’s someone calling me an adopted Scouser – ah, that gives me a great feeling.”
Van Dijk has been a key member of Liverpool’s success since arriving from Southampton for £75 million in January 2018, winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.
Named captain in July 2023, the Dutch defender has guided Liverpool to the verge of a second league title, the Reds 13 points adrift at the summit.
Next comes Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose deal expires this summer to strong reports of interest from Real Madrid.
