Super Eagles and Bayer 04 Leverkusen striker Victor Okoh Boniface has been named the Bundesliga Rookie of the Year, The 23-year-old joined Leverkusen from Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise in August and quickly made an impact, earning the Newcomer of the Month award for August, September, October, and November.
Boniface has been pivotal in Leverkusen’s record 50-game unbeaten run, contributing 13 goals and nine assists in the league. His stellar performances secured him the Bundesliga Rookie of the Year award, beating out competitors like on-loan Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen (Borussia Dortmund), on-loan PSG midfielder Xavi Simons (RB Leipzig), and Hoffenheim’s Maximillian Beier.
Despite a three-month absence due to an adductor injury, which also saw him miss the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Boniface has been instrumental in Leverkusen’s quest for a treble. He has amassed 20 goals and 10 assists in 32 games across all competitions.
With the Bundesliga title already secured, Boniface and Leverkusen are now aiming for further success in the upcoming Europa League final against Atalanta and the DFB-Pokal final against FC Kaiserslautern.
The Nigerian striker’s remarkable season has also put him in contention for the African Player of the Year award.
