Around 300 Ukrainian refugees in Swindon who sought safety in the UK following the outbreak of war in their homeland will soon be eligible to extend their visas. Starting Tuesday, February 4, eligible residents can apply to the Ukrainian Permission Extension (UPE) visa scheme, as announced by the UK government. This extension offers crucial support for Ukrainians seeking refuge in the UK.
Swindon’s Council Support and Outreach for Visa Extensions
Swindon Borough Council is proactively contacting known Ukrainian residents who may qualify for the UPE visa extension to provide support throughout the application process. This proactive approach demonstrates Swindon’s commitment to assisting Ukrainian refugees. The council’s Warm Welcome team is playing a vital role in this effort.
Eligibility and the 28-Day Application Window
These visa extensions will grant Ukrainians an additional 18 months of residence in the UK. However, it is important to note that applicants must apply within the 28-day window before their current visa expires.
Swindon’s Support for Independently Accommodated and Hosted Refugees
Of the 300 Ukrainian refugees in Swindon, 172 are living in independent accommodation, and 112 are in accommodation with hosts under the Homes for Ukraine scheme. All eligible individuals will be contacted regarding the visa extension process.
Meanwhile, for households still hosting Ukrainian refugees under the Homes for Ukraine scheme, “Thank You” payments will continue even after visa extensions are granted. These payments acknowledge the generosity of host families.
The “Thank You” payments will also be adjusted from £500 to £350 per month for all hosts starting in April 2025.
