The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics under the auspices of its National President, Dr. Anderson Ezeibe has said that it would likely resume work at the end of the two-week strike currently being held by the union. Earlier, the strike was announced on the 16th of May and was scheduled to end on the 30th of the same moment.
In speaking on the matter, Dr. Ezeibe said that the union decided to embark on the strike to demand the revitalization funds promised to them by the government, which so far none of them have seen any trace of; the renegotiation of their conditions of service and also the discussion of the new minimum wage and how it affects them. This was brought up after the Federal Government’s recent move in paying both the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) their accrued minimum wage arrears.
According to Dr. Ezeibe, upon resumption, the plan is for the National Executive Council to meet and review the government’s response to their demands and also discuss other issues that the Federal Government has yet to even consider like their promised revitalization funds. The president then concluded that any further developments on the strike action would be related after the NEC meeting.
