Year-long Escape Saga: Nigerian Government Orders Swift Action on Fugitive Prisoners

Can you believe it’s been a whole year since prisoners broke free and are now blending into communities in Nigeria? Our government’s got skills, but unfortunately, it’s not always where we need it. The House of Representatives had a serious sit-down on Wednesday, demanding the Nigerian Correctional Service to spill the beans on the inmates who made a run from the Medium Security Custodian Centre back in 2022.

During the big meeting, they ordered their Reformatory Institutions, Interior, and Police Affairs Committees to team up with security heads and cook up a juicy report about these runaway inmates.

Guess what? They want this report ready for show-and-tell in six weeks! This all came after Emmanuel Ukpong–Udo, a rep from Akwa Ibom State, waved his magic wand and sponsored a motion on the issue.

Let’s rewind a bit: remember when the Islamic State in West African Province claimed they crashed the party at the Kuje Custodian Centre in July 2022? That led to a bunch of Boko Haram prisoners dashing for freedom. Some people think it’s politically spiced motivated.

Ukpong-Udo didn’t hold back, pointing out that on July 5, 2022, about 879 inmates, including 64 Boko Haram buddies, did a Houdini, and only 422 got caught again.

The House took a hard look, stating that the Correctional Service needs to step up its game, pull up its big-boy pants, and figure out how to trace these escape artists using their database.

They’re worried that among the 350 runaway rascals with various rap sheets, there might be some law-abiding people in the mix, making it tough for law enforcement. It’s a real-life hide-and-seek game with some serious stakes.

Can you believe it’s been a whole year, and these guys are still out there, probably sipping coconut water on some beach or something? It’s like we’re moving at a snail’s pace in some areas, especially for a big country like ours!
