The Yobe State House of Assembly has hastened the deliberation of a bill, proposing amendments to the law that created the state university.
After rigorous debate, the proposed bill by the government’s executive branch was passed through the second reading in the legislative body.
Hon. Nasiru Hassan Yusuf, the Majority Leader of the House, while arguing for the proposed bill, had remarked that the amendment would shorten the duration of the Vice Chancellor, Registrar, Bursar and Chief Librarian’s service in the university from two 4-year terms to a single five-year tenure.
The majority leader had also declared that the measure will enable the university to comply with global best practices, while extensively discussing the significance of the amendment.
The representatives of Gujba and Damaturu II constituencies, Hon. Buba Ibrahim Kalallawa and Hon. Bulama Bukar had for their part, voiced their support for the bill, explaining that it would give the state university a chance to be on the same level as other institutions in the country.
Rt. Hon. Chiroma Buba Mashio entrusted the bill to the House Standing Committee on Higher Education in order to continue the legislative process.
The House recently ratified Baba Gana Bukar Gujba’s appointment to a four-year term as a permanent member of the state Pilgrim Commission.
