10 People Die In Rwanda As A Result Of Heavy Rainfall

In the wake of heavy rains that have plagued Rwanda over the past 10 days, the Ministry in charge of Emergency Management revealed distressing news of casualties and damages caused by natural disasters. According to the ministry’s permanent secretary, Philippe Habinshuti, at least 10 individuals lost their lives due to various incidents triggered by the heavy downpours. Landslides and lightning strikes claimed the lives of several victims across different regions of the country.

Among the tragic incidents, the Rutsiro district in western Rwanda witnessed the most recent fatalities, where two individuals lost their lives in a landslide caused by the relentless rains. In another heartbreaking event, a mother and her child perished in Kigali’s Gasabo district when their house collapsed during a torrential downpour last weekend.

The consequences of the heavy rains extended beyond loss of life, as property damage became evident with destroyed houses, crops, and road infrastructure reported across various parts of the country. The Rwanda Meteorology Agency issued warnings earlier, predicting heavy rains in several regions during the first 10 days of May. In response to these forecasts and the ongoing disasters, the government urged residents residing in high-risk zones to relocate to safer areas to mitigate further casualties and damages.

Efforts are underway by the ministry to conduct a comprehensive assessment to determine the full extent of the impact caused by the recent natural disasters. This proactive approach reflects Rwanda’s commitment to managing and responding to natural calamities. Unfortunately, this is not the first time Rwanda has faced such challenges. In May 2023, floods and landslides struck western and northern Rwanda, resulting in the tragic loss of 135 lives.

In conclusion, the recent heavy rains have once again highlighted the vulnerability of certain regions in Rwanda to natural disasters. While the government’s response has been swift, there is a pressing need for sustainable measures to mitigate the impact of such events and protect the lives and livelihoods of its citizens.
