Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim openly stated that his squad have a lot of work to do after a dull 0-0 draw with Leeds United that was their first pre-season friendly in Stockholm on Saturday.
After an awful 2024/25 season where United finished 15th in Premier League and also lost the Europa League final to Tottenham, expectations were soaring for a new start. But the Red Devils did not manage to inspire fans against newly promoted Leeds, although debutant Matheus Cunha was in the starting XI.
After the game, Amorim told that the main problem was the lack of pace in the midfield.
“We got a bit of trouble when we pressed high,” he told MUTV. “They played the ball, got the second ball, and that created danger. We have a lack of pace, especially in the midfield, and that makes it difficult to carry the ball forward.”
United fashioned some opportunities but lacked snappiness and rhythm, which are the things that Amorim thinks would get better with time.
“We have a lot to improve—the speed of the game, all the details. But it was a good first test.”
United will play against West Ham on July 26 at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey.
