A new, internal front has opened in Ukraine as a sprawling $100 million corruption scandal has forced the suspension of a top cabinet minister, shaking public faith and exposing deep-seated graft within the wartime leadership.
Justice Minister German Galushchenko was suspended pending an investigation into an alleged kickback scheme controlling procurement at the state nuclear agency, Energoatom. While Galushchenko has not been named a suspect, one of his advisors has, and a source confirmed the minister’s voice was captured on recordings with individuals now detained in the case.
The scandal, unveiled in a series of slickly produced videos by Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU), is the latest crisis for President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who faced street protests earlier this year after attempting to limit the powers of the very anti-corruption bodies now exposing the alleged scheme.
