Attention Electricity Customers: Did You Get Overcharged?

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has good news for some electricity customers. If you were recently billed at a higher rate than usual, you may be due a refund!

Here’s what happened: NERC recently introduced a new electricity tariff with different rates depending on the quality of service received. Band A is for customers who get at least 20 hours of electricity supply daily and has a higher rate.

Unfortunately, some electricity distribution companies (DisCos) mistakenly charged customers who are not in Band A at the higher rate.

NERC

The good news is that NERC is requiring the DisCos to refund these mistaken charges! Customers who were wrongly billed have until April 11th, 2024 to receive a refund through “energy tokens.” These tokens can be used to pay for future electricity usage.

Here’s how to find out if you’re due a refund:

Check your electricity provider’s website: All DisCos are required to publish a list of feeders designated as Band A. If your feeder is not on the list, you were likely overcharged.

Use a online portal: By April 10th, DisCos must set up a webpage where you can enter your meter or account number to see your current band.

Remember, the deadline to claim your refund is April 11th! Don’t miss out on this opportunity to get money back for electricity you weren’t supposed to pay for.
