Betsy Arakawa, a classical pianist, died from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), a severe respiratory illness caused by exposure to infected rodents. Her last known movements were on February 11, when she visited a farmers market, pharmacy, and pet store before returning home.
Authorities found Arakawa’s body in a bathroom near a portable heater, which she may have been carrying before collapsing. A prescription bottle and scattered pills for a thyroid condition were found nearby, but officials confirmed she was taking the medication as prescribed.

Meanwhile, Arakawa’s body was found in a bathroom, and their German Shepherd dog was discovered dead in a nearby closet. The dog’s autopsy results are still pending.
