Cameroon suffer goalkeeping crisis, third-choice Omossola to start against Nigeria

With less than 24 hours to the first of two friendly international matches against the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Indomitable Lions of Cameroon coach Antonio Conceiçao may be forced to start Congo DR-based Simon Omossola in goal after a freak training-ground injury knocked out first-choice goalkeeper Fabrice Ondoa.

Ondoa, who injured his finger in training on Tuesday, joins second-choice goalkeeper Blondy Nounkeu who pulled out of the double-header internationals after sending a medical report of an injury to the coaching staff weeks back.

Consequently Omossola, on the books of AS Vita of Congo  as well as Devis Epassy of Greek club Lamia are the only goalkeepers available for selection but Omossola is on course to be in action at least for the first of the two friendly games on Friday, June 4th at the Weiner Neustadt Stadium in Austria.

Omossola, if he gets the nod, will be recording his second senior cap for the Lions after he impressed against Rwanda at the Japoma stadium in their last game.

The 23-year old will also have the chance to burnish his credentials for more regular playing time should he post outstanding performances in the games with Nigeria against whom the Lions have a dismal record, least of all a 3-0 loss in the last friendly between both sides followed by a 3-2 loss at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt.
