English actor Brian Murphy, best known for his role in the TV series Man About the House (1973–1976), has passed away at the age of 92.
Murphy’s passing was announced by his wife, Linda Regan, in a post on X. She shared a heartfelt photo of them together, expressing her enduring love for him.
“My love for you will never die. RIP Sweetheart,” the post reads.
The actor passed away at his home in Kent, England, on Sunday.
Murphy’s agent, Thomas Bowington, also paid tribute to him on Instagram.
Bowington described Brian Murphy as a “sprinkler of joy” on and off stage, noting that he will be deeply missed. He also revealed that the actor appeared in his final television series in November and December 2024.
“Our client, Brian Murphy has died at the age of 92. Brian filmed his last television series back in November and December last year,” the post reads.
“A sprinkler of joy on as well as off stage! A truly great actor and man! Greatly missed!”
Murphy, born on the Isle of Wight in 1932, started his career in the 1950s as part of the pioneering Theatre Workshop.
He later collaborated closely with theatre director Joan Littlewood during his early career.
In 1973, he gained widespread recognition for his role as the landlord, George Roper, in ITV’s Man About The House.
The show was considered controversial for its time, as it depicted two single women living with a man.
When the show ended in 1976, Murphy starred in the spin-off George and Mildred, which ran for five series until 1979.
Murphy’s acting career spanned nearly five decades, with appearances in over 100 films, comedy dramas, and television series.
Murphy met his wife, Regan, in 1990, and they tied the knot in 1995.
Murphy is survived by his wife, Regan, and his two children, Trevor and Kevin, from his previous marriage to Carol Gibson.
