Brighton & Hove Albion recorded a famous 3-1 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford, their third Premier League victory at the famous stadium in a row.
The Seagulls opened the scoring within five minutes as Carlos Baleba launched a ball which found its way to Kaoru Mitoma and he squared it to Yankuba Minteh to tap it in. United reacted quickly, inspired by their midweek victory over Southampton. Joshua Zirkzee was fouled in the box after the keeper Bart Verbruggen sent an errant pass out of bounds. Bruno Fernandes dispatched the penalty to equalize.
After an evenly matched opening half, Brighton took the lead again in the 60th minute. Mitoma was on the scoresheet, meeting a perfect low cross he followed in to make himself the highest-scoring Japanese player in history in the Premier League.
The visitors bagged their points in the 76th minute, taking advantage of an error from United’s goalkeeper André Onana who dropped a cross into the path of Georginio Rutter for a simple finish.
United now 13th in table and perilously close to relegation zone Brighton, in contrast, were back-to-back winners to lift themselves into ninth, reviving European hopes under Fabian Hürzeler.
