A bomb placed in a car that was parked outside a restaurant in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu had exploded on Sunday night, killing five persons and injuring 20 as the patrons were watching the final of the Euro 2024 football tournament on TV. Police officials have blamed Islamist insurgents for this incident.
A news reporter had said that the bomb bladt damaged 10 cars and several buildings nearby in a well-protected area near the Presidential Palace.
Meanwhile, Al Shabaab militants have claimed responsibility for the attack while speaking on an affiliated radio station, saying the bombing had earmarked a place where security and government workers usually met at night.
The Islamist group has been fighting for years to impose its strict interpretation of Islam on Somalia, frequently conducting raids and deadly attacks in Mogadishu and the other regions controlled by the federal government in the last two years, regardless of the fact that they were constantly losing large swathes of territory to government forces and their allies.
