The Congo national football team has withdrawn from match day 3 of the World Cup qualifiers due to non-approval of their home stadium in Brazzaville.
The Alphonse Massamba Débat stadium, currently undergoing renovations, was deemed unfit for hosting the crucial match against Niger’s Mena. The Congo Football Association, led by Sports Minister Hugues Ngouélondélé, proposed relocating the match to Kinshasha. However, despite awaiting inspection by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Niger refused to play in Brazzaville and insisted on the game taking place in Kinshasha.
Faced with this impasse, Congo made the difficult decision to withdraw from match day 3. Instead, they will now focus on their upcoming match against Morocco on match day 4. This decision underscores Congo’s commitment to fair play and respect for the game’s regulations.
Ngouélondélé explained the decision, stating, “The Congo national team will not play in Kinshasa. We accept the package because Congo is a country of its word, and when we have given our word, we respect it. When we are faced with a situation that does not meet our values, we do not proceed with it. This is why the decision to forfeit was made.”
Currently, Congo sits at the bottom of the group standings. However, the team remains hopeful and focused on their upcoming matches. This incident serves as a reminder of the challenges teams often face off the pitch and the importance of infrastructure in the world of sports. As Congo prepares for their next match, fans and players alike will be looking forward to a spirited performance.
