On Thursday, in northwestern Pakistan, gunmen killed about 38 people and injured 29 others when they opened fire on passenger vehicles.
This report was according to the chief secretary of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Nadeem Aslam Chaudhry.
Among the casualties in the attack, which took place in the Kurram tribal district, were a woman and a child, with Chaudhry adding that “It’s a major tragedy and death toll is likely to rise.”
Tensions have persisted for decades between the armed Shia and Sunni Muslims over a land dispute in the tribal area bordering Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, the group had claimed responsibility for the incident.
A local resident of Parachinar, Ziarat Hussain had told Reuters on telephone, saying;
“There were two convoys of passenger vehicles, one carrying passengers from Peshawar to Parachinar and another from Parachinar to Peshawar, when armed men opened fire on them.”
The resident also added that his relatives were traveling from Peshawar in the convoy.
President Asif Ali Zardari, issued a statement, strongly condemning the attack on passenger vehicles.
