The Department of State Services Service, (DSS) has released Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress even as fears of a possible strike action linger.
Ajaero was released late Monday night on administrative bail in what critics have said is a move to avoid a potential shutdown of the economy
Omoyele Sowore had confirmed the release of Ajaero through a statement posted through his official X account on Monday midnight.
The post read;
BREAKING: The fascist regime of @officialABAT has released the @NLCHeadquarters President Joe Ajaero from @OfficialDSSNG custody on bail,” he wrote on X.com.
However, the labour union itself –NLC had not officially confirmed his release as at the time of filing this report.
Ajaero’s release is coming after NLC had in a communique promised to shut down the country’s economy if Ajaero was not released before midnight on Monday.
On Monday, Ajaero was arrested Monday morning at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, while en-route to the United Kingdom for an official engagement.
His arrest had garnered criticism across the spectrum with both the NLC and Trade Union Congress calling for his immediate release.
Already, the NLC had directed all its affiliate unions to be on a red alert for action if Ajaero was not released.
Consequently, the National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE also issued a notice on the grid shutdown if Ajaero was not released on Monday.
