FCT Police Personnel Reject NLC Ultimatum

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has announced that it has directed its personnel to the headquarters and national secretariat of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, to prevent bloodletting following the leadership conflict the union is presently experiencing.

Recall that the factional groups in the NURTW led by Tajudeen Baruwa and Basiru Agbede had had an altercation over the decision to dismiss the elected leaders.

This development had led the police command to post officers to the area, in a bid to put an end to the fight and prevent further breakdown of law and order.

But on Monday, August 28, the Nigeria Labour Congress, criticised the occupation of the facility by purported thugs and police officers.

The union, in a memo issued after its Emergency National Administrative Council meeting in Abuja, had shunned the involvement of the Nigeria Police in the occupation of the facility, lamenting foul play by the police force.

The union had thereafter, given the Nigeria Police 48 hours to exit the NURTW National Secretariat, emphasising that it would commence on a strike if the Federal Government failed to intervene and reinstate the appointed leaders.

But in response to the NLC ultimatum, the FCT police had in a statement issued on Tuesday night by its spokes representative, SP Josephine Adeh, insisted that the police command was only enforcing its duty by posting personnel to the area to guarantee the safety and security of citizens.
