Finnish Police Say School Shooting Motivated by Bullying

Finnish police had said on Wednesday that the motive for the school shooting which happened on the outskirts of Helsinki on Tuesday, April 2, in which a 12-year-old boy died, was attributed to bullying.

The suspected attacker, aged 12, had been detained and taken into custody after the shooting at Viertola school in Vantaa, on the outskirts of Helsinki, on Tuesday, April 2.

Two other pupils, two girls also aged 12, were shot during the incident. They had been seriously wounded.

Police officials had said in a statement:
“The suspect has said during interrogations that he was the target of bullying, and this information has also been confirmed in the preliminary investigation by the police.”

Finnish Police Say School Shooting Motivated by Bullying

The shooter and the victims were all classmates.

During the attack, some of the school children had reportedly hidden while the other school kids who were contacted by their parents on mobile phones reported that they saw what happened.

The school, located on the outskirts of the Finnish capital Helsinki, boasts of around 800 students from first to ninth grade – aged seven to 16.

The Finnish government has already declared Wednesday a nationwide day of mourning.
